Get started on the right track with 1,000 Books BeforeKindergarten!

Who? Any child from birthuntil s/he enters kindergarten! Of course, kids can’t do it alone… you and anyone else help by reading to them.

What? Read to yourchild—any books you like: books from home, library books, books read at a storytime…any book counts!

When (and how long)? Any time. This program is self-paced, so how long it takes your child to get to 1000 books is up to you. It can take several months or several years, and it's easier than you think. Just one book a night is 365 books a year—that makes 1000 books in under three years’ time! And yes, repeating a book is just fine.

Where? Any place you like.If your child attends a story time or is read to by a babysitter or grandparent or whoever—it counts! So it really can be anywhere.

Why? The list is almost inexhaustible: to stimulate language and cognitive skills; to build vocabulary; to encourage positive feelings about books and reading later in life; to help children cope during stressful times; and to bond with your child! This early childhood literacy program is designed to help you prepare your children for one of life's big milestones: kindergarten.  Myriad research projects have proven over and over that children get ready to read years before they begin their formal education.  The most effective way to get your child ready to learn is to read to him or her.

How? Just read and log what you have read. After you register, come to Hurst Public Library’s Youth Department to pick up a Journaling folder, which includes other helpful information to help get you started. You may use this computer program as your log if you like, but all you need to put in the computer is the number of books you have read.

You may also use a smart device to help you keep track:

Snowmen At Night
by Caralyn Buehner

Cute book about what the snowmen are up to while we're sleeping... the little guy was so into it I had to explain that there are no snowmen on a September night in Texas.
